Note : Some more Carpenter will do us some good, and here's one that also happens to be, in my opinion, one of the better Stephen King adaptations. You'd think King's homey, sentimental good old days settings and Carpenter's cynicism wouldn't work together, but here they mesh very nicely. It's also got Carpenter's trademark stylish scope cinematography, and a cast full of good character actors, including Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky, Harry Dean Stanton (maybe this is a prequel to Repo Man?), Christine Belford, and Roberts Blossom.
In 1957 Detroit, a red Plymouth Fury maims one worker and mysteriously kills another before it even leaves the factory. In 1978 California, hopeless nerd Arnie Cunningham is bullied by a gang of sideburns hoodlums, before his only friend Dennis Guilder rescues him, and one of the bullies gets expelled for carrying a switchblade. After school, Arnie and Dennis spot a broken-down Plymouth Fury for sale on a messy lot of a house that's also for sale. The seller is the brother of the original owner, who recently died, and he seems to be eager to get rid of the car, which he calls Christine. Arnie buys it. Since Arnie's parents won't let him keep the car at home, he gets a part-time job at a garage where he starts restoring it. Over time, Arnie starts getting more cocky and arrogant, and even gets a hot girlfriend. Dennis confronts the seller of the car, whose brother was also obsessed with the car, and whose niece choked to death in it, and that his sister-in-law and finally his brother committed suicide in the car. While playing football, Dennis is so shocked at seeing Arnie making out with his girlfriend that he gets severely injured and can't play football anymore. However, things start going south when Christine seems to be jealous of Arnie's girlfriend, leading to her almost choking to death in the car, and when the bullies from earlier break into the garage and vandalize Christine, they set into motion a brutal series of vengeance killings from the self-repairing, self-driving car, which is almost as deadly as a modern Tesla.
This is an older transfer, and from a positive or similar, I think, but it looks quite good, with nice contrast, slightly crushed blacks, poppy color, and decent detail. The 5.1 remaster and the stereo track both sound good, and it's always interesting to listen to John Carpenter on commentaries.
