Cassette Master->Reel to reel 1st gen->Digital copy of 1st gen
This is the digital copy of Alex Wilsons 1st gen reel to reel recording first mentioned in 2005.
Alex Wilson is the founding member of the band Iron Claw. A band you can find more information about
here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Claw_(band)
Alex Wilson is also the taper of the now legendary first ever live recording of Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath 1969-11-16 Dumfries, Scotland.
Alex in 2005: "I've just found this recording that I have from the above date and
I'm pleased to say it's the whole show I believe! I was reading your comments about
the Sheffield show four days previous to this one and I can definately say that the
following is the running order. I saw Sabbath a couple of days previous to this show
at Edinburgh, and they had the same set for both shows.
The opening number "Paranoid", "N.I.B.", "War Pigs", "Into The Void", "Iron Man",
"Black Sabbath", "After Forever", "Wicked World" (sadly with one of my breaks in the middle again!),
"Fairies Wear Boots", and finishing the evening off with "Paranoid" again! I remember talking to
them after the Edinburgh show. I asked why they did it twice and they said it was to "get it out of
the way" at the start for the pop fans. At first I couldn't understand why they did it again at the
end! I haven,t listened to the tape all the way through yet for quality."
Alex in 2020: "Monday, 18th January 1971 at Newcastle City Hall, Iron Claw were the guests of
Black Sabbath... we had been invited to Newcastle after meeting them backstage on the previous
Friday (15th January) in Edinburgh after their show at the Empire in order to hand over the
first Iron Claw album we'd recorded, that they were interested in hearing. We were hoping it
might lead to some contacts in the Music Biz.... Anyway, I took the opportunity to record them
as we were actually seated behind the band looking down from above their gear set-up! I am led
to believe this is the only recording of that night in the world..."
Alex told me he decided to start digitizing his huge collection of recordings and for the first time
in 49 years he heard the entirety of this recording July 2020.
The supposed recording of this show:
1971-01-18 Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, UK (AUD, taped by Alex W., incl.
"Into the Void" + "After Forever"! Available on a strictly limited - 5 copies - vinyl bootleg)
came as a complete surprise to Alex when I mentioned it to him, and he told me it couldn't possibly
be his recording because he had never shared his reel to reel with anyone, nor had he heard it in it's
entirety until July 2020 and he has never digitized it until now.
Huge thanks to Alex for sharing and please check out his band Iron Claw!
