Contribution Name RAW Science Film Museum (ripped by R-Raws) Translation Perevodildo Editing Paul Geromini This anime is another one from the science film archive, you won’t find it in any database, and even the exact release date is unknown, but because the film’s subtitle reads “Animated film commemorating the 30th anniversary of his death,” we know at least it was released in 1990, since Kagawa died on April 23rd, 1960. This work’s title is self-explanatory, it’s a dry retelling of the events of life of one Toyohiko Kagawa (voiced primarily by Tomiyama Kei), a Christian religious activist from early 20th century Japan, with occasional animated reenactments. It can probably best decribed by Paul’s impression: "possibly the dullest show I have ever worked on, just wall to wall text about a guy who is trying to sell insurance. Still kind of interesting for a minute or two" In essence this show is quite similar to another one in my pipeline currently—Ningen Kakumei (although that one can boast significantly better animation and video quality, as well as a comprehensive plot line)—one is about Toda Josei and Daisaku Ikeda, the Buddhist missionaries who definitely left their mark in the history of Japan with their Soka Gakkai organization, the other is about Toyohiko Kagawa, a primarily Christian activist, who focused more on actually helping the poor with actions and fighting inequality and misery, as opposed to saving the people’s souls as you’d usually expect from a Christian proselytizer, or as opposed to what Soka Gakkai was focusing on. Although you’ve probably never heard of either, while Soka Gakkai’s footprint is bigger in Japan’s history, encompassing several million people even to this day, Kagawa’s contribution lies more in the international plane, since he could speak English and worked primarily for the worldwide peacemaking (even landing him four nominations for the Nobel Peace and Literature Prizes), and at one point he nearly became Japan’s prime minister.
