Angel Heart (1987), directed by Alan Parker, StudioCanal 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, director's commentary track, and subtitles in French and German. Note : Here's an oddity, a supernatural neo-noir involving voodoo rituals, talented musicians who unexplainedly disappear or die, and possibly the devil himself. It didn't do well on release, but I think it's underappreciated, and is quite an interesting and original outing, some flaws aside. Also, Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet must have been some of the most beautiful people in the world when they made this, and we get to watch them fuck. The rest of the pretty stacked cast includes Robert De Niro, Charlotte Rampling, Stocker Fontelieu, and Pruitt Taylor Vince. In 1955 NYC, private investigator Harry Angel is hired by a man named Louis Cyphre to find Johnny Favorite, a singer who suffered neurological trauma in WWII, and has since gone missing. Cyphre has a contract with Favorite, whose real name is John Liebling, and thinks the psychiatric hospital where he was last seen receiving treatment has falsified records. After investigating the hospital, Angel tracks down Dr. Fowler, who indeed falsified records and turned Favorite over to a pair of unknown persons who bribed the doctor so they could take him away. Angel wants more information, so forces the doctor to go through morphine withdrawal, but Fowler ends up apparently killing himself. After Cyphre pays him more money, Angel travels to New Orleans, where Favorite's socialite fiancée, as well as his daughter from an affair with an African American woman, might provide more information. However, death seems to follow Angel wherever he goes, and two New Orleans detectives are hell bent on making his life difficult, even as he uncovers a conspiracy involving voodoo, satanism, stolen identities, orgies, and supernatural deals, and possibly even some truths about himself. StudioCanal 4k remasters have been something of a mixed bag, and this is somewhere in the middle, a pretty decent, although somewhat grainy and murky scan, which is not helped by the color grading, turning skin tones slightly pinkish, a bit dark and dull, and slightly lacking in saturation. But it's quite watchable all in all, and the 5.1 track sounds pretty good. The director's commentary track also has some interesting facts, as usual. Hot tip
