Note : Here's a conspiracy thriller I remember fondly. Though it's from the 80s, I feel like it's spiritually more rooted in the 70s, with the bureaucratic betrayal and skepticism about the government (I guess at this point, a lot of people in the Soviet Union were getting skeptical about their government). It's tightly plotted, suitably cynical, and has a great cast, including William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, Ian Bannen, Joanna Pacula, Michael Elphick, Richard Griffiths, and Ian McDiarmid. If you like twisty conspiracy thriller mysteries, this is for you, I think.

Arkady Renko is a Moscow cop who's called to a crime scene where three people, two men and a woman, are found murdered and with their faces and fingertips cut off. The KGB refuses to take over the investigation, which makes Renko suspicious. He traces the dead woman's ice skates to a film industry worker named Irina, who claims her skates were stolen. Forensic scientists identifies one of the dead men as a foreigner, likely American, and Renko requests face reconstructions based on the skulls. At a social gathering, Renko meets American businessman Jack Osborne, who's importing sable furs from the Soviet Union, and who is accompanied by Irina. He also meets William Kirwill, a NYC detective who's investigating the disapperance of his brother James. When one of the dead bodies is identified as James Kirwill, Renko investigates a black market dealer who admits he was comissioned by Osborne to build a religious reliquary with hidden compartments, but soon after, both the black market dealer and one of Renko's colleagues are murdered. While Renko still doesn't trust Irina, they begin a relationship after he saves her from assassination, and Renko begins to learn the truth about a conspiracy to smuggle incredibly valuable live sables out of the US, which also might involve people from the KGB.

This is a pretty rudimentary release, not the best transfer, slightly desaturated, not particularly sharp, a bit dirty, and with a whole lot of grain, but it's watchable. The stereo track sounds fine too, and there are no extras at all.
