The Game - The Story of Hurling (1080p, soft English subtitles)
Landmark documentary series celebrating Ireland’s iconic sport of hurling.
E01 The Birth of Hurling
Born in a haze of myths and legends, this episode explores the birth of hurling and the hurler. Ulster warrior Cú Chulainn is a key figure in its iconography, and today, the Poc Fada competition follows his trail across the Cooley Mountains. And what does hurling mean to the island as a whole? Where does it lie in history and Ireland’s unfolding identities? Charting the formation of the GAA alongside the turbulent times of the Land War and mass emigration, this episode explores the groundwork on which a remarkable sport was founded. Whether it’s the ultimate dream of representing your county in Croke Park on finals day or the tribal pride of playing for club or parish, picking up a hurl and sliotar brings a true sense of belonging to something much bigger.
E02 Agents of Change
We meet some of the superstars of hurling who left an indelible mark on the sport, including Limerick's Mick Mackey, Wexdford's Nicky Rackard, and the legend that was Christy Ring. These were the men that fans travelled cross-country to see. Charting Cork’s four-in-a-row victory, through to Wexford’s toppling of the blue bloods in the 1950s, and on to the indomitable Tipperary backline in the 1960s, this episode explores eras of great change, and not just for hurling but for the island as a whole. Newspapers gave way to radio, with television broadcasting following in the 1960s. Hurling had a new medium and new audiences, but the two pillars of an Irish Sunday – church and the match – were no longer the only distractions, and Ireland of the late 1960s was now beginning to look very different.
E03 The Quest for Perfection
This episode explores the hunt for perfection within hurling. We see teams learning to win, with Galway’s breakthrough in the 1980s giving way to Ger Loughnane’s winning Clare side in the 1990s and Kilkenny’s fine-tuning of the pressure game in the 2000s. Tactics and fitness take on entirely new dimensions, and the rise of sports science elevates the standards expected of hurling giants. There is also a look at the women’s game and the battles camogie has had to fight to be recognised in its own right. As hurling has made its way through the early 2000s and the dawn of social media, what has that meant for the sport and the men and women who play it? For all the modern advancements in science and training, what lies at the heart of the game hasn’t changed at all – it’s still the magic of pure skill and the aura surrounding the heroes of the sport that draw the crowds in.
E04 The Game Goes On
This episode reveals the intensity of All-Ireland final day. We look back at Limerick's historic win in 2018 to explore that precious moment of victory, as well as the differences between winning and losing. Contributors give frank and heartfelt reflections on retirement and when they return to the stands as supporters.
