On the evenings of 19–20 October 2019, an unforgettable concert dedicated to the television anime Princess Principal was held at the Maihama Amphitheatre in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture. Composer Yuki Kajiura, who worked on the series’ background music, and musician Ryo Takahashi, who was responsible for the theme song and character compositions, presented a series of famous melodies that frame the world of Princess Principal, intoxicating many fans with their live sound. This special show was brought to life by Kajiura and Takahashi together with their bands, and the songs, carefully selected for the event, were accompanied by vivid animation from the series.
In the first part, Void_Chords, together with vocalist-composer Yui Mugi, presented the opening theme ‘The Other Side of the Wall’ and began the performance with a number that represented the worldview and characters of Princess Principal. For this performance, Mugi performed all the compositions in a special version with English lyrics. There are various melodies, from lively tunes to romantic ballads, but Yui Mugi performs them perfectly, in keeping with the mood of the song. Everyone gathered that evening was pleasantly surprised by the opening theme ‘LIES & TIES’ from the feature-length episodic sequel ‘Princess Principal: Crown Handler,’ the first chapter of which is scheduled to be released in Japanese cinemas in 2020! The final composition of the first half of the concert was ‘A Page of My Story,’ which was also the ending theme for the television anime.
The next live performance, led by Yuki Kajiura, brought together the most talented musicians, most of whom are known to the general public from her solo project FictionJunction. There was a lot of background music, including the main theme ‘shadows and fog’ with a memorable motif, as well as the masterful use of the violin, saxophone and flute by the entire ensemble. The interlude gives an idea of the everyday life of the spy girls; the final stage is a tense development, reminiscent of their brutal mission. In the composition ‘moonlight melody’, known to fans of the anime series as the insert song for the episode ‘Rouge Morgue’, the beautiful singing of four divas filled the entire amphitheatre: Kaori, Keiko, Yuriko Kaida, and Joelle. The entire stage was filled with a sense of unity.
At the end of the show, the members of Void_Chords, led by Takahashi, returned to the stage, where a true dream collaboration was realised. The musicians played ‘shadows and fog’ with two groups at the same time, and the concert came to a grand climax with a magnificent constellation of talented performers who inspired the Princess Principal universe with their voices and music.
