Note : Quentin Tarantino sold the screenplay to this to finance Reservoir Dogs, and it's pretty much a perfect encapsulation of what a Tony Scott/Quentin Tarantino mash-up would look like, with frantic action scenes, witty dialogue, pop culture references, and a ridiculously stacked cast which includes, somehow, Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Bronson Pinchot, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport, and Saul Rubinek. It's a pretty good time, honestly. Clarence is a loser living in Detroit who mostly cares about kung fu movies and Elvis, but when he meets Alabama, the chemistry is immediate. The only problem is, Alabama is a call girl hired by Clarence's boss, and although she's actually falled in love with him, and the two get married on a whim, there's still the problem of her abusive pimp. Clarence, convinced by a vision of Elvis to take matters into his own hands, kills the pimp and takes a bag he assumes has Alabama's belongings, but which turns out to hold a large amount of cocaine. He turns to his father, an ex-cop, for help, and the newlyweds leave for Los Angeles, while Clarence's father is interrogated and killed by mobsters who found Clarence's drivers license in the dead pimp's hand. As they concoct a plan to sell the cocaine to a rich movie producer, with the help of some useless LA deadbeats, both the cops and the mob are closing in, and it all comes to an explosive finale. This is a great 4k remaster, with tight, subtle grain, poppy color, great contrast, and nice detail. Both sound options are similarly great, and the plethora of commentary tracks, including one with renowned dickhead Michael Rapaport, is sure to be more than anyone would ever need.
