The recently departed free jazz drummer and educator Alvin Fielder (1935-2019)
was given a fitting tribute by compatriots Edward “Kidd” Jordan/ts, Joel
Futterman/p, William Parker/b and Hamid Drake/dr-perc on this June 12, 2019
concert. The single marathon piece has Jordan coming out of the corner swinging
hard, blowing in the most altissimo of altissimos, with the rhythm team digging
in, stretching out and laying out for solo spaces of other members. Parker and
Drake deliver some three-legged racing together, both display their own wares
as Jordan shrieks, squawks and shouts around Futterman’s ripples, poundings and
explorations. A wild ride with no brakes!
