Note : Irish director Neil Jordan has done a lot of different stuff, most of it pretty interesting, and this, one of his several trips to horror town, is no exception. A prestige sorta-kinda adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, but also a meta-narrative about stories which subverts your expectations about the werewolf genre, it also features a dude knocking Angela Lansbury's head clean off. Murder, she wrote indeed. The rest of the cast is also full of excellent character actors, including Sarah Patterson, David Warner, Graham Crowden, Brian Glover, Kathryn Pogson, and Stephen Rea.
A British girl falls asleep and dreams that she's living in an 18th century fairy tale setting with her parents and her sister Alice. Wolves kill her sister, and she's sent to stay with her grandmother, who has very particular opinions about men's facial hair and grooming standards. She meets a boy in the village, stumbles upon some dead cows, and when the villagers hunt the wolf responsible, it turns into a man once killed. She later runs into a huntsman with facial hair outside of granny's expectations, but granny loses that particular argument, and the girl obviously has some sexual feelings for the huntsman, which leads to an unexpected conclusion. All the while, different characters tell each other wolf- and transformation themed stories.
This is a quite nice 4k remaster of a very lush and good-looking film, but it's a little dark and with crushed blacks at times, and it's very grainy. Still, a generally pleasant viewing experience, the stereo track sounds fine, and both commentary tracks are worth your time.
