Vocalist Jeffrey Hawks and guitarist Joey Newman originally knew each other from Don and the Goodtimes, and they played with bassist Bruce Hauser in the renowned progressive-psychedelic band Touch. After the band's breakup, the three, along with drummer Len Fagan, formed the heavy blues-rock band Stepson in 1974, releasing a curious and solid album for its genre that same year. Almost all of the material was written by the band members themselves, and the backbone of each track is the dialogue between vocalist and fuzzed guitar. Jeff Simmons guested on one track, and on the album's cover, the musicians "specially thank" Arthur Lee of Love and Chris Hillman of The Byrds
