Ian Andersonās Musical Beginnings
Ian Anderson, born in Fife, Scotland, is one of the most famous flautists of the last 40 years. A singer and composer, Anderson is also a multi instrumentalist, including acoustic and electric guitars, saxophone, percussion, keyboards, bagpipe, violin, balalaika, clarinet and a large variety of whistles. He is the lead vocalist and founding member of the innovative and influential progressive rock band Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson's style mixes folk, Celtic, jazz, rock, blues and pop, and his lyrics are complex, acerbic and critical of society and religion. As a flute-player, Anderson is self-taught, his style inspired by another accomplished flautist, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. In 1963 his fellow school friends Barriemore Barlow (drums), John Evan (keyboards), Jeffrey Hammond (bass guitar) and Michael Stephens (guitar), with Anderson taking singing and harmonica playing duties, formed their first band The Blades, a soul and blues outfit. In 1965 they regrouped into The John Evan Band with major lineup changes. They disbanded two years later when Anderson moved to Luton.
Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull
Ian Anderson is mostly known as a frontman of a rock band Jethro Tull, where he presented the world his distinctive style and innovative use of the flute within rock music context, which made him a noticeable figure in the world of progressive rock and beyond. Ian Anderson, the iconic frontman of Jethro Tull, playing the flute in his unique style, which influenced progressive rock music significantly. He formed Jethro Tull in 1967, with guitarist Mick Abrahams, bassist Glenn Cornick, and drummer Clive Bunker. The early music of the band had strong blues and jazz fusion vibes; however, Anderson moved the band towards a more progressive and folk-influenced sound. They earned some acclaim in the London scene, and released their first album, "This Was" in 1968. However, Jethro Tullās real commercial success came with their second album, "Stand Up", released in 1969. Their creation reached number one on the UK charts. The band toured in support for this album throughout the UK and US. Jethro Tull deserved widespread acclaim thanks to Andersonā songwriting skills and their unique sound. His tendency to stand on one leg while playing the flute came about by accident, as he had been inclined to stand on one leg while playing the harmonica, holding the microphone stand for balance. Anderson became known for his famous one-legged flute stance, and was once referred to as a "deranged flamingo". This stance is depicted on several Jethro Tull album covers. During a long stint at the Marquee Club, a journalist described him, wrongly, as standing on one leg to play the flute, when in fact he was originally playing the harmonica on one leg. Albums like "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" released in 1971 and 1972 respectively, solidified Jethro Tullās status as leaders in the progressive rock genre. "Aqualung" became iconic due to its complex themes and memorable riffs featured there, while "Thick as a Brick" was a single-track concept album lasting 43 minutes, that demonstrated Ian Andersonās passion for storytelling in music.
