Description:

Year: 1932 Country: Italy Director: Alessandro Blasetti Cast: Raffaele Viviani, Leda Gloria, Salvatore Costa, Marcello Spada IMBD: Link Language : Italian Subtitles : Italian, English In 1932, Viviani enthusiastically participated in the production of La tavola dei poveri (The Table Of The Poor), an adaptation of his one-act play of the same name, directed by Alessandro Blasetti. The film, financed by Emilio Cecchi's Cines, is a comedy with dramatic undertones that follows the daring adventures of Isidoro Fusaro (Raffaele Viviani), a fallen marquis determined to maintain a wealthy lifestyle befitting his noble title. Fusaro juggles debts and broken promises, and as a member of a charity committee, he is obliged to organize charitable works for the poor. Unfortunately, he is the one who needs help, now reduced to starvation. Reflecting bitterly on poverty, already central to the 1931 text, the playwright—also in the role of screenwriter alongside Soldati, De Stefani, Cecchi, and Blasetti – worked on the film with the intention of ennobling “his Naples,” “the Naples of workshops and shipyards, where the people live in grueling, exhausting labor.” Viviani rejected the narratives, songs, and stereotypical characters of the Neapolitan melodrama in vogue in those years, and with Blasetti's help, he brought to the big screen—as he had done in the theater—the image of a popular and miserable Naples. The drama of the story is fully conveyed by the refined acting of the actor from Castellammare di Stabia. Consider the episode of the charity banquet in which Fusaro, desperately hungry, restrains his desire to eat the soup intended for the poorest; or the final sequence of the film in which the marquis, now consumed by poverty, still fights to maintain his dignity, and to his amazement is mistaken for a beggar. With a monocle, morning coat, and moustache, Viviani brought to life a multifaceted, lively, and deeply melancholic character who seemed to anticipate the peculiarities of the protagonists of Vittorio De Sica's neorealist cinema and was compared by some reviewers to ‘the purest Charlot’.
