Jean Dieudonne has advanced the idea of the good mixture of mathematical spirit (essential to the well being of mathematics) in an individual. He differentiates between the tactician who faces a problem with old and well-tested tools and the strategist who imbeds the problem in a general theory with the result that the final solu tion often appears as a triviality.
