The European building stock is responsible for up to 36% of the CO2 emissions. It is also stated that about 75% of the European building stock is considered energy inefficient. In order to lower the CO2 emissions, and improve the energy efficiency of the European building stock, significant changes need to be made to the existing building stock and future buildings. More than 80% of our present energy consumption is chemical and non-renewable (coal, oil and gas). The most important renewable energy alternatives (wind and solar energy) need to be implemented to reduce CO2 emissions. The renewable transition will require a collective effort using many different types of energy conversion and storage devices and technologies to remove the dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels entirely.
