Lasers, which were developed in the early 1960s, have not only played an important role in the advancement of scientific knowledge in a wide variety of fields, but have also found commercial applications in a multitude of devices that have become important in our daily lives. These applications include CD/DVD players, laser printers, and fiber optic communication devices. While these devices depend largely on the monochromaticity and coherence of the light which lasers produce, other well-known applications such as laser machining and laser fusion depend on the intensity of laser light.
