The purpose of this design guide is to give the reader a general idea of the problem field of heat exchanger design, sizing and optimizing. Emphasis is on thermo-hydraulic design of the heat exchanger; mechanical design and system optimization are beyond the scope of this guide. Only recuperators, or heat exchangers where two fluids are separated by the heat transfer surface that normally has no moving parts, are covered. This restriction of scope leaves out regenerators – heat exchangers where the heat transfer is performed through a material that is alternately brought to contact with hot and cold streams, storing energy from the hot stream and releasing it into the cold one. Boilers and condensers are also left outside of the scope of the guide
