My original hopes that the material in the book would stand the test of time seem to have been reasonably fulfilled, and the reception of the book has been generally satisfactory. Accordingly, I have left the structure of the contents largely unaltered, apart from deleting much of the work on linear programming so as to sharpen the emphasis towards the control field. The solutions to the exercises have been omitted so as to encourage students to work these for themselves. Errors have been corrected, results have been updated where appropriate, and many new references have been added. Also, a few new topics have been incorporated, including the matrix sign function in Section 4.4, the discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation in Section 5.3, an application of generalized inverse to linear feedback in Section 6.3, and suggestions for further reading in Appendix 6.
When the first edition was published in 1971, it brought together for the first time in book form a large number of recent results in the field. Despite the appearance during the subsequent decade of several excellent textbooks on the theory of linear control systems, there is still no other book directly comparable to this volume. It is therefore hoped that this revised and updated edition will continue to play a useful role by providing a collection of matrix results specifically aimed at students and researchers in the control and system theory fields
