He first made a national impact performing as Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, whose fiery assault on R&B was characterized by gritty passion and fiery energy. After exploding on the charts in 1966 and 1967 with singles like "Jenny Take a Ride" and "Devil With the Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly," Ryder, at the encouragement of producer Bob Crewe, went solo, though albums like 1967's "What Now My Love" and 1969's "The Detroit-Memphis Experiment" lacked the fire of the Detroit Wheels' hits and failed to chart. After achieving regional success with the hard rock band the Detroit Wheels, Ryder abandoned music (after experiencing a sore throat, he moved to Colorado with his wife and took up writing and painting) until he released 1978's How I Spent My Vacation, a powerful set that showed he was still a strong vocalist and songwriter. While 1983's Never Kick a Sleeping Dog (produced by John Mellencamp) featured a hit with a cover of Prince's "When You Were Mine," he was largely known in the United States as an oldies performer, but he enjoyed a contemporary career in Europe, particularly Germany, where he frequently performed and released fresh material, culminating with producer Don Was on 2012's The Promise
