The name Bubble Puppy was chosen while they were high at a Hendrix concert after reading Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." Under the new name, they headed to Austin, where they played at the now-legendary Vulcan Gas Company, but after signing with International Artists, they moved to Houston. Their first 45 reached number 9 on the US charts in March 1969 and combined hard rock with fresh vocal harmonies. The album, which reached number 176 on the US charts, continued in the same style, and although three subsequent singles did not match the success of the first, the band became the most successful project of the International Artists label since 13th Floor Elevators. While touring with Steppenwolf, bassist Nick St. Nicholas suggested Bubble Puppy move to California and sign with his label, ABC/Dunhill. Consequently, they changed their name to Demian, releasing an album of the same name in 1971
