Synopsis:
The highs and lows of Chiaki Matsumoto’s life come to light as she trains to become a stewardess, following in her late father’s footsteps. She navigates demanding instructors and a budding romance with her instructor Hiroshi Murasawa.
Here you have another classic Daiei TV J-Drama, fully subbed in English! This one’s quite iconic in Japan. This series was a collaboration between Daiei TV and Japan Airlines (JAL), both of which were prominently featured in previous Daiei dramas with scenes set in JAL airports and airplanes.
Originally a novel, Stewardess Monogatari being adapted for television by Daiei, brought along its unique quirks to the screen. Expect melodrama, exaggerated dialogue, and shocking plot twists, with the story diverging significantly from the original work. Yasuzo Masumura, known for this distinctive style, directed the first episode and wrote the majority of them, so you can expect his mark on the series.
The show’s theme song is a Japanese cover of Irene Cara’s classic “What a Feeling,” performed by Miki Asakura. Fun fact, this TBS Channel 2 airing retained a few licensed Western songs that were cut from the DVD release. These include Arabesque’s Dance Dance Dance in episode 9, Madonna’s Burning Up in episode 17, and Kenny Loggins’ Footloose in episode 19. I included subs for the lyrics of a few of these tracks.
Big thanks to the now-defunct JPTVclub for providing the RAWs. This recording comes from their capture of a TBS Channel 2/TBSチャンネル2 broadcast at 1080i. Since the show aired on that channel using a standard-definition master that was then upscaled to 1080i, I opted to just make my encodes at 640x480. Enjoy!
