Leader Tomas Fujiwara plays drums and vibes with another drummer Gerald
Cleaver, a pair of guitarists in Mary Halvorson and Brandon Seabrook with horns
proved by cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and trumpeter Ralph Alessi. The result is a
traffic jam of seven songs that include a crash and burn chaotic “Pack Up,
Coming For You” with oblique horns and thunderous drums,as well as violent
pounding with vocal groans and greasy guitar for “Docile Fury Ballad”. Hectic
guitar and horns get frantic on “Wave Shake and Angle Bounce” with sharp angles
cutting flesh on “Life Only Gets More”. There is actually some lyricism and
gentility for “Silhouettes in Smoke”, but it’s drummed out of our mind on the
closing “For Alan, Part II”. As calming as an avalanche.
