Description:

PP: rescale (720p match centers lanczos2), conservative aa, denoise, deband, regrain Audio from JPBD, subs are heavily modified gg (see description) Source-Encode Comparison Note: This show assumes some degree of familiarity with Kenji Miyazawa’s Night on the Galactic Railroad (the inception of which was set in motion by his sister’s passing), and the 1995 sarin attack. Interestingly, this show also makes even more direct reference to the 1985 anime movie adaptation of Miyazawa’s novel, the best current release for which you can find here (a release I was part of, would you look at that). The show also makes many references to a number of other works, mostly Haruki Murakami novels. I highly recommend these write-ups that help elucidate the intertextuality of this work (recommended you read these after finishing). Penguindrum can be a bit impenetrable or absurd at times, but over the course of the runtime its iconogography turns out to be potent symbolism and much of its genius and emotional depth can be unravelled by exploring its intertext. It’s a very unique work: silly, theatrical, full of references to old anime you’ve probably not seen, even fuller with parallels to books I warmly recommend to anyone reading, and most of all incredibly moving. For better and for worse it is something you would only see in anime. Its eclectic nature might wind up off-putting to some, but others with an appetite for shows like it should have as fantastic of a time as I did. To that end I hope the resources provided above will prove helpful and insightful. Low effort encode and medium effort release that I made for myself to re-watch. Concerning the encode I shifted the UKBD to fit JPBD timing and did mostly routine filtering with stronger-than-average debanding. The show is full of really bad banding, a few times per episode so bad that customfiltering may be needed. But as this was a release meant for me to just watch the show I did not do any such scenefiltering. To that end, some scenes need scenefiltered antialiasing, the endcards need a separate filterchain, and anyone looking to improve on this encode should definitely scenefilter the occasional but bad shimmering (which mostly occurs with the railings in the underground library). There also exists a German BD now that trades blows with the UKBD, so smart ways to make use of both sources could make for a better encode, too. Concerning the subtitles There were two complete scripts: gg, and the official English subtitles. Both are not good, for different reasons, and are better than the other at different things. I went with the gg subs because I found them to be mostly better, outside of the more poetic passages of the show. Importantly they are way funnier in the scenes meant to be funny. But they also suffered from 0 QC so I had to spell-check, grammar check, and manually edit every single episode for dozens of errors per episode. Dozens of lines were also completely mistimed (sometimes by over a second), which I fixed. I also tried to edit and salvage borderline nonsense lines whenever I found them by crossreferencing other scripts (or just editing into proper English). The typesetting in this is rough, because it is 14 years old, and I left it unedited. I did however add modern alt style handling and made dash usage consistent (among a few other consistency fixes). This show either needs a talented editor with range to edit this version of the gg script, or a completely new translation (though I’d urge to consult gg for anything meant to be funny). If you attempt to do that I highly recommend watching the show in its entirety before even thinking about touching the script. Typesetting should just be completely re-done for a higher quality release. This is the best we have for now.
