* Monthly Review [socialist magazine] - 2000–2025 complete (285 issues)
Format: PDF
MONTHLY REVIEW is an independent socialist magazine published monthly in New York City. Founded in 1949 by Paul M. Sweezy and Leo Huberman, it is the longest continuously published socialist magazine in the U.S. From its beginning, Monthly Review was characterized as having "a nondoctrinaire approach to socialism" that became increasingly critical of the Soviet Union. It was most closely linked to Third World socialism and national liberation struggles, and consequently saw its popularity grow among the New Left during the Vietnam War.
Over the decades, Monthly Review has played a central role in developing and disseminating critical Marxist thought, particularly in the areas of monopoly capitalism, imperialism, and underdevelopment. Under the long editorial leadership of figures such as Harry Magdoff, John Bellamy Foster, and others, the magazine expanded its focus to include ecological Marxism, global inequality, racial capitalism, and the political economy of neoliberalism. It has also served as a platform for major socialist thinkers from around the world, helping sustain an internationalist intellectual tradition through periods of political marginalization.
Ideologically, Monthly Review is rooted in a non-dogmatic, humanist Marxism that emphasizes democratic socialism, anti-imperialism, and ecological sustainability. It is independent of political parties and critical of both capitalist institutions and authoritarian distortions of socialism, while remaining firmly opposed to reformist liberalism. The magazine positions itself as a vehicle for serious socialist analysis aimed not only at interpreting the world, but at contributing to movements seeking to transform it.
Each issue generally features original content, including full articles, book reviews, and poetry, with exceptions such as reprises or adaptations of previously published work. Everything in the current print version is freely available on the magazine's website.
