Description

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Season 1.
Video source: US NTSC Laserdiscs
Audio source: NTSC DVD Dolby Digital 5.1
For Seasons 1-3 the Laserdiscs are a big leap forward in quality from the DVD releases we are all used to seeing, The original master tapes (seasons 1-3) were a composite video format (same as laserdiscs) and they messed up the conversion to DVD (a component format) which is the version we're used to seeing on all the streaming services. The laserdiscs seem to be a straight transfer maintaining the original quality of the masters.
This release is fairly basic in that the whole episode is subjected to the same processing, a one size fits all approach, Big quality gains can be made by processing each scene in an episode individually, this would be insanely time consuming, there are ongoing projects you can read about online doing this, I hope that one day we will all be able to enjoy their work but at the moment this is not available to the public other than short clips that are occasionally put up online.
Post-processing Video:
Laserdisc raw RF capture using Doomsday Duplicator, Stacking, 3D Comb Filter, Crop, De-interlace, Inverse telecine, Rainbow reduction, Ghosting reduction, Dot crawl reduction, Color grading, Colorspace Conversion, Enhancement(2xUpscale, Noise reduction, Sharpening), Lanczos Rescale 720p, HEVC Encode.
Post-processing 5.1 Audio:
Manual synchronisation of audio to laserdisc video at various cut points within the episodes (the cut timings between sections are different).
I cannot take much credit for this release; All I have done is collated years of collective work from other teams across the internet and put it together to make a release. Credit must firstly go to the team of people who have collected and collated all the Star Trek Laserdisc copies and ripped and stacked them, this is an extremely time-consuming process, it has taken thousands of hours and several years which they then made publicly available on the internet. Credit to all the restoration projects that have gone before and their thousands of hours of trial-and-error adjustment to find the best possible filter combinations and settings to get the best out of the video footage and sharing them on their internet blogs, this is a truly global team effort of enthusiasts. Finally, the people who created the Doomsday Duplicator device which has made it even possible to rip a Laserdisc to this standard.
