With international success comes the universal problem of how to stay true to your original home audience while still appealing to the rest of the world. For Culture - Rastafarian poets and masters of chanting and a harmony-rich style of reggae - the answer was to keep doing what you do best. 1979's International Herb would be the trio's final album together for seven years. Like their previous three albums, this one was also produced by Sonia Pottinger and backed by the Revolutionaries. Of course, the musicianship is superb, the brass passages are sharp enough to shave with, and the rhythm rock-steady. Culture, being Culture, still delivers up the lyrics with conviction. Equalling the brilliance of Two Sevens Clash or Harder Than The Rest, International Herb is a wonderful record. Virgin's original LP version of International Herb generated some controversy thanks to its front cover, which showed Culture's members smoking large spliffs while standing in front of a tall, bushy marijuana plant. The title song is unapologetically pro-marijuana, while other noteworthy tracks (including "Ethiopians Waan Guh Home," "Rally Around Jahovah's Throne", "Jah Rastafari", and the brilliant "Chiney Man") put forth a very Rastafarian message with a deep hypnotic groove that never wavers.
