He began to learn the guitar at the age of nine, and at fifteen he already had his own group, McCoys. In the summer of 1965, Rick experienced his first success when "Hang On Sloopy", his band's bubble gum anthem, pushed the Beatles' "Yesterday" to the top of the charts. The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy (1965) was the band's first record, Derringer's "Hang On Sloopy" played on Red Square in Moscow when the Soviet government allowed rock and roll to be played. The McCoys toured successfully for four years, including playing the entire 1966 Rolling Stones American tour, after which Derringer joined the Johnny Winter "Johnny Winter And" project. Two albums were recorded with Johnny, and Derringer acted on them not only as a guitarist, but also as a producer. In addition, it was during the "And" Derringer period that his most famous hit "Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo" was written. When Johnny started having serious drug problems, Rick went to work for his brother Edgar Winter while doing a bit of rocking on "Steely Dan". In 1973, Derringer made his debut with the solo album "All American Boy".
