Staff - Mr. Misfortune (1:57) The third, and final, disc of a series devoted to obscure psychedelic rock cut at Golden State Recorders in San Francisco in the 1960s. This could be seen as taking genre fanaticism to an extreme. There was a lot of great psychedelic music made in this area during this period, but the groups on this compilation -- most of whom never even got to release vinyl (all but three of the 25 tracks were previously unissued) -- are not as well known as the Jefferson Airplane, or even the Mystery Trend, because they were not nearly as good. If you're a completist, though, you might be interested in this material due to its sheer rarity, and the sound quality is good. It's pretty derivative of bigger West Coast psych acts, and at its best when female-fronted groups are trying to plug into an obvious Jefferson Airplane vibe, as on the selections by the Short Yellow, the Royal Family, and the Collection. Beau Brummels fans might also want to know about the folk-rock cuts by Butch Engle & the Styx, which were penned by Beau Brummel Ron Elliott (and not recorded by the Brummels themselves). This also has the Book of Changes' Tower single "I Stole the Goodyear Blimp," a well-liked psych-garage tune that has previously been reissued in less stellar sound quality
