You cut well, but the best sword stays in its sheath!

Toshiro Mifune swaggers and snarls to brilliant comic effect in Kurosawa's tightly paced, beautifully composed "Sanjuro." In this companion piece and sequel to "Yojimbo," jaded samurai Sanjuro helps an idealistic group of young warriors weed out their clan's evil influences, and in the process turns their image of a proper samurai on its ear.

Director: Akira Kurosawa
Cast: Toshirō Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Keiju Kobayashi, Yūzō Kayama, Reiko Dan

Note : Let's do some more Kurosawa, here's the loose sequel to Yojimbo, originally conceived as an independent story, but was retooled to feature the same man with no name main character after Yojimbo was a success. Perhaps not quite as good as the first, but still top-notch samurai entertainment, headed up as usual by Toshirō Mifune, with Tatsuya Nakadai, Keiju Kobayashi, Yūzō Kayama, Reiko Dan, Takashi Shimura, and Kamatari Fujiwara.

Nine young samurai petition the court against fraud, but the lord chamberlain tears up their petition, leading them to suspect he's corrupt. A superintendent offers to help them, but while they're secretly meeting at a shrine, they're interrupted by a ronin, who warns them not to trust the superintendent. They're skeptical, but soon they find themselves in the middle of an ambush, and the ronin protects them. As he's leaving, he realizes the chamberlain is now in danger, and decides to stay and help. It turns out the chamberlain has been abducted, and his wife and daughter are held prisoner in the house. The ronin convinces a servant to get the guards drunk, which allows the young samurai to free to women. However, the ronin wants to get close to the corrupt officials, and approaches their henchman Hanbei and starts gaining his trust, expressing his desire to work together. This dangerous deceit leads to many near misses and twists before the group can finally rescue the chamberlain, expose the corrupt superintendant, and the ronin can face down Hanbei, who he's realized is not very different from himself.

This Criterion UHD SDR transfer is quite good, although again I think contrast is a little lacking. But it's clean and stable, with good detail and tight, subtle grain. The audio tracks also sound good, and the commentary track is interesting.
