In the years since the frst edition was published, dynamic mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has become a common tool in the analytical laboratory. However, information on the use of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is still scattered among a range of books and articles, many of which are rather formidable looking. It is still common to hear "I heard about DMA - what is it and what will it tell me?” This is often expressed as “I want a DMA in my lab, but can’t justify its cost.” The novice in the feld has to dig through thermal analysis, rheology, and material science texts for the basics. Then they have to fnd articles on the specifc application. Having once been in that situation, and now helping others in similar straits, I believed 18 years ago that there was a need for an introductory book on dynamic mechanical analysis. The assumption proved to be true. There have been enough changes in recent years that a third edition seems to be justifed
