A girl named Mary Morsten comes to Sherlock Holmes, who asks him and the doctor to help solve the annual receipt of one pearl by her parcel and in the search for her father, who disappeared many years ago. Sul finire dell'Ottocento, Londra è una città affascinante e pericolosa. Le novità tecnologiche attirano i cittadini più curiosi, ma il richiamo per l'occulto e il soprannaturale è altrettanto forte. Quando Sherlock Holmes e il fido dottor Watson consegnano l'assassino di giovani donne Lord Blackwood alla giustizia e, dopo aver assistito all'esecuzione capitale, assistono non di meno alla sua apparente resurrezione, Holmes è felice di potersi finalmente interessare di qualcosa alla sua portata. Tanto più che si è ripresentata a lui la bella Irene Adler, chiedendo il ritrovamento di un uomo che si scoprirà interrato nella bara di Blackwood.
