Description

Orphan is redoing as many of the stories from the 1986 anthology series Seishun Anime Zenshuu (translated as Animated Classics of Japanese Literature for its English release) as we can find sources for, starting with the twelve episodes released in North America on DVD. We’ll be releasing the show as individual stories; today’s is The Harp of Burma, based on a 1948 children’s story by Takeyama Michio. See this blog entry for more details.
In the waning days of World War II, the Inoue platoon is fleeing from the Anglo-Indian advance into Burma. Singing songs to keep up their spirits, they stop at a seemingly-friendly Burmese village to rest. There, they are surrounded by Allied troops, who inform them that the war has ended. Their captors ask for a volunteer to convince a holdout Japanese unit to surrender. Private Mizushima agrees. He never returns. Months later, the interned Japanese troops encounter a silent Burmese monk who resembles Mizushima, but he refuses to meet their eye or talk to them. Only when they are departing for Japan do they learn what happened to their comrade, and his new mission in life.

This is one of the better offerings in the Animated Classics series, despite its whitewashing of Japanese atrocities in Burma.
Batch in a few days.
