Description
Conclave (2024) is a political thriller based on the novel of the same name by British writer Robert Harris.
Plot: After the death of the Pope, preparations begin in the Vatican for the conclave, a closed meeting of cardinals at which a new pontiff will be elected. The main organizer of this process is Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, Dean of the College of Cardinals, played by Ralph Fiennes.
Lawrence, who is experiencing a crisis of faith, is faced with a multitude of intrigues and ulterior motives among his colleagues seeking to occupy the highest position in the Catholic Church. As events unfold, Lawrence discovers secrets and scandals that could shake the foundations of the Vatican and influence the outcome of the election.
The plot focuses on the struggle for power, where candidates for the Holy See are not as sinless as they seem at first glance. Political ambitions, secret alliances and unexpected revelations turn the conclave into a chess game, where each move can cost not only the position, but also the moral character of both a particular cardinal and the entire Catholic Church.
The film raises fundamental questions: what is more important: faith or the institution of power, whether it is possible to maintain the purity of beliefs while inside the system, whether the church is ready for the changes dictated by the modern world.
"Conclave" is a film adaptation, for which the Sistine Chapel, where the conclave traditionally takes place, was recreated in detail
