Note : We lost genius filmmaker David Lynch recently, and while I've already done some of his films, I figured another one was in order, and this quite nice 4k remaster of one his more accesible films will do nicely. It's a touching, sad, and beautiful portrait of a man who looks monstrous, but shows himself to be more human and dignified than most of those around him. The beautiful, stark black and white cinematography is by our old friend Freddie Francis, and at times reaches the etheral quality of the work of Rudolph Maté, Carl Theodor Dreyer's DP on Vampyr and The Passion of Joan of Arc. It was executive produced by Mel Brooks, interestingly, who approved Lynch as a director after apparently really loving Eraserhead, and the cast is also amazing, including Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, and Wendy Hiller. This is a much watch for anyone who enjoys great cinema.

In a prologue, elephants strike down John Merrick's mother, and an infant can be heard crying. Surgeon Treves finds the adult Merrick in a freak show in London's East End, where Mr. Bytes keeps him hooded. Treves pays Bytes to bring Merrick to the hospital for examination. Treves shows Merrick's deformed head to his colleagues, mentioning that he has to sleep sitting up, or he would asphyxiate. When Merrick returns to Bytes, Bytes beats him so badly that an errand boy has to bring Merrick back to the hospital, where Treves to his suprise finds him to be intellectually competent and able to speak. Treves keeps him at the hospital and begins to teach him, but it turns out Merrick already knows how to read, and has a talent for memorization. As Merrick becomes an object of curiosity in London society, Treves questions his actions, as it seems he's still being put on display, while Bytes and others with less scrupulous motives plot to make money on him.

This is a crisp, clear, and nicely detailed and textured remaster, with tight, subtle grain and excellent contrast. The stereo track also sounds quite good. As usual with most Lynch films, there's no commentary track.
