Description:

You know she’s the best. Technical Details Element Format Source Video 1080p HEVC BD (Lineart, Light areas), CR (Chroma, Dark Areas) Audio 2.0 Japanese FLAC BD Audio 2.0 English AAC (1-7) /EAC3 (8-25) CR via 9volt (1-5, 7), Amazon via 9volt (8-25), CR via Toonshub (6) Subs English ASS 9volt (Restyled) Subs Songs + Signs 9volt General Details This is my personal copy of the show made so I could watch it as I prefer, as opposed to a release intended for the public end user. This means this splices in non-credit OPs/EDs because I like them, changes Norah -> Nora because I prefer that spelling, and also has playall files available because I preferred to watch each arc as a movie instead of as individual episodes. It was not going to be released publicly but I received a few requests to do so, so here it is. Video Ramblings The BD video has major issues. There is an incredible amount of banding throughout and the Chroma is shifted and blurred. However, CR has static dithering which really looks ugly. The encode uses CR for the dark areas to help with the banding, as well as its chroma, merged with the BD’s lighter flat areas and lineart/details. Both sources had haloing issues too which were corrected to the extent that my crappy encoding skills were capable of doing. Sadly, there are a few scenes that lost some detail due to debanding requirements, but I feel such a thing was unavoidable. If you believe differently, here’s a fully commented and rationalized vpy you can modify as you wish and do it yourself. Of note of anyone planning on doing this - OP2 had 2 redraws in it, but it is not reflected in the credited version of episode 14, so make sure to splice in episode 15’s OP into episode 14’s OP location. inb4 “this video is total trash, you suck!” comments. Audio Ramblings I like FLAC. You prefer OPUS. My personal files have what I like. The English tracks were taken from 9volt’s release with the exception of episode 6 which had a fix related to a missing piece of dialogue. These are CR sourced AAC 2.0 for 1-7 and Amazon sourced EAC3 2.0 for 8-25. Apparently Amazon was mono for 1-7 hence the earlier CR sourcing. Sub Ramblings The subs are mostly unmodified 9volt. The following changes were made: Change the font to Gandhi Sans because I prefer sans serif subs (and change a few paddings to remove a few new triple liners as a result) Moved ED1’s locations to the non-credit areas (ED2 sadly cannot due to overlaps) Replaced all instances of Norah with Nora{Best Girl} Corrected 2 typos (episode 7 19:36 and episode 14 1:50) and removed 1 pop culture reference. Video Changes There were 455 changes from airing to BD I could find. It probably is closer to 500, as some ranges listed had multiple scenes with changes in them. A change ranged anywhere from changing the shading to better match the lighting, to blurring non-focal characters (a good thing), to redrawn characters, to repositioned characters/objects, to consistency fixes (such as having the snake curl the same direction in arc 4), to redone scenes (changing from pictures of wheat to the characters talking), all the way to major changes like fixing the interlaced pan in episode 2 or remembering that Holo has a tail! Yes, this is a lot. For comparison, the entirety of Frieren’s Blu-ray has about 9 changes total in 28 episodes. Playalls Playalls are an optional feature - videos will play normally if you watch the individual episodes. A playall uses ordered chapters to link together the 6 episodes making an arc (1-6, 7-12, 14-19, 20-25) into one playlist that removes all previews as well as all OPs/EDs except the first OP and the last ED. This allows one to watch each arc like a movie. Despite the presence of Nora in it, episode 13 I consider a standalone episode not associated with any arc so it is not included in any playall. Nora There are two European roots to the name Nora. The first branch came from the Latin word “Honor” which means the same as we think in English. This became changed into a feminine name Honora, which was rare but used by nobles and clergy. It wasn’t until the 17th century that “Honorah” came into usage, primarily in Ireland. As Spice and Wolf is set in a European setting before the commonality of gunpowder (likely the 14th or 15th Century) this means the name Honorah likely did not exist at the time. The second branch comes from “Eleanora.” The origin of Eleanora is less clear. Its roots either came from Helen (meaning Light) -> Alienor (Provencal name), or it came from alia Aenor meaning “the other Aenor” used when both mother and daughter were named Aenor. As most spellings of this became Eleanor by the 1200s due to Eleanor of Aquitain’s popular usage, Nora in Spicy Wolf likely came from the first path. In both cases, Nora was informally used at times as a diminutive name - something very likely for a girl like Nora who was related to the church but not happy about it. That said, such nicknames did not become commonly used until around the same time Honorah came into usage in the 17th century, and wasn’t used as a given name until about the 19th century. So it is entirely possible Nora’s name is an anachronism. Regardless of the history of it, I chose to use Nora instead of Norah because I like the spelling more. And since this is my personal version, that makes me right. :) One more important fact about Nora - she is the best girl.
