Cleaver. Cleaver. Chop. Chop. First the mom and then the pop. Then we'll get the pretty girl. We'll get her right between the curl.

To cope, he retreats into an alternate child personality he calls Georgie. After being caught during a theft attempt at a department store, he befriends a female customer who is sympathetic to him, but his friendship soon turns into obsession.

Note : I had a request for this, and it turns out it's pretty great, a weirdo psychosexual thriller that was apparently quite controversial when it came out, both for the portrayal of a protagonist with supposed Down Syndrome, and the weird sexual obsession and wanton murder. The whole style is a bit reminiscent of gialli, which might explain why I like it so much. The cast is also quite good, including Hayley Mills, Hywel Bennett, Billie Whitelaw, and Frank Finlay. And, of course, this is where that whistled tune in Kill Bill comes from, the title theme to this film, composed by the legendary Bernard Herrman.

Martin is a troubled young man whose brother has learning difficulties and is kept in a home, and whose widowed mother has remarried to a posh banker of the kind Monty Python used to caricature around this time. When Martin sees the pretty Susan in a toy store, he steals a duck toy and follows her out, which leads to both of them being caught, the store detectives believing them to be working together. However, when questioned, Martin presents himself as the childlike, innocent "Georgie", and when Susan offers to pay for the toy, they're let go. Martin, whose home life is deteriorating, shows signs of dual personalities, the adult Martin and mentally challenged Georgie, and develops an obsession with Susan, as well as comparing his own naked body to that of bodybuilders in magazines. In character as Georgie, he approaches Susan at the library where he works, to pay her back for the toy, and then tells his parents he's going to France, before presenting himself as Georgie at Susan's mothers' house, where she's renting rooms, showing a letter supposedly from his parents to obtain a room. One night, he steals scissors from the house, and goes to his parents' house to stab his stepfather to death. This leads the police to start looking for Martin, while Susan discovers signs in his room that he's not as innocent and childlike as he might seem. Martin starts spinning out of control as the police closes in, and when Susan's mother sexually propositions him, it sets into motion a series of tragic events.

This is a quite nice looking remaster, clean and fairly sharp, with not too prominent grain, and good color and contrast, although reds are a bit oversaturated at times. The dual mono track sounds fine, and the commentary track is interesting enough.
