Note : A lesser Sam Raimi film is still usually worth watching, and I found myself liking this more now than when I watched it in the theater back when it came out. It's a tightly plotted little southern gothic with supernatural elements, and it sports a hell of a cast, including Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear, Hilary Swank, Michael Jeter, Kim Dickens, Gary Cole, Rosemary Harris, J.K. Simmons, and Chelcie Ross.
In rural Georgia, widow Annie Wilson is a psychic who gives readings to locals to support herself. Two of her frequent clients are Buddy Cole, a young, emotionally unstable mechanic, and Valerie Barksdale, who's frequently abused by her husband Donnie. Annie has repeatedly counseled Valerie to leave Donnie, and when he learns of this, he threatens Annie repeatedly. When Jessica King, the young fiancée of school principal Wayne Collins, disappears, Annie has visions of her being killed and her body thrown into a pond. She convinces local sheriff Johnson to search ponds in the county, and when the body is found on the property of Donnie Barksdale, he's arrested for murder, and convicted after he confesses to having an affair with Jessica. In the meantime, Buddy reveals a family secret in a dramatic and violent outburst, and is sent to a mental hospital. Soon after, Annie has more visions, and becomes convinced Donnie is not the true killer, but who can she trust, and will supernatural forces intervene?
This is a very nice 4k remaster of a quite good-looking film, with nice saturation and contrast, tight, subtle grain, good detail, and while it's not entirely clean, it's very watchable. 5.1 track sounds good too, and while it's a shame there's no commentary from anyone involved in the production, both commentary tracks are interesting anyway.
