Orphan is pleased to present its first Tezuka Osamu project in two years: the first four episodes of the 1993 sci-fi OVA series Magma Taishi (Ambassador Magma). Drawing for inspiration on the master’s 1960’s manga and tokustatsu (live-action special effects) TV series, the show postulates an ageless conflict between Goa, evil Emperor of the Cosmos, and the spirit of the Earth (confusingly called Earth) for control of our planet. Earth-the-spirit creates a giant golden rocket man called Magma that defeats Goa and scatters his body across the universe. The Atsuka clan seals his soul, and Magma too, in the ground. Fast forward to the present. Goa’s minions have reassembled his body and are preparing to unseal his soul. The descendants of the Atsuka clan try, unsuccessfully, to prevent this and are swept aside. The burden of fighting Goa falls on young Murakami Mamoru, aided by the unsealed Magma. Goa has monsters, monstrously powerful robots, and creatures that can imitate humans on his side. What can one boy (and a giant golden rocket man) do against these powerful forces? Goa is voiced by Oohira Tooru, the Laughing Salesman himself.
