Source Info:
This is the first encode based on the R3 Hong Kong DVD which is unique for being the only home release offered in an open matte 4:3 presentation over the letterboxed R1 DVDs and JPBD.
The film was originally produced in a fullscreen frame and subsequently cropped vertically for widescreen formatting like so:
Consequently this releases gains an addition ~26% vertical viewable frame but loses ~10% horizontally from the narrower field of view.
Further Screenshot Comparisons vs. Widescreen JPBD
Notes:
While the greater visible picture is nice, this is still SD footage. Light treatment to reduce and/or eliminate, rainbowing, aliasing, and haloing was applied to the extent possible without harming detail or introducing artifacts. Blended frames were also reduced. There remains some residual chroma ghosting and very minor frame glitches in the source transfer which unfortunately could not be corrected for, though they aren’t distracting. See encode comparison screenshots.
The audio on the DVD was lossless PCM and was compressed to FLAC. Because of how the transfer was authored, syncing in the English dub or higher-quality JPBD audio proved unsuccessful.
Subtitles are the same newly QC’d ones for the BD release but retimed separately to the R3 DVD video, available in both styled and unstyled viewer options.
